Catching Silhouettes is an oral history street performance project initiated by the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), directed by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li, and Nina Zoie Lam. Five commissioned artists combined oral histories and other materials from MOCA’s archives with multidisciplinary devised theater to shed light on how waves of newcomers shaped Chinatown’s identity during the 80s, 90s, and now.

The artists took audience members on a tour through Chinatown, to: experience the bygone bustling movie theaters that served as cultural epicenters; follow the footsteps of the Fujianese community’s migration to and expansion of Chinatown; discover the vital role of religious centers as anchors of support; and witness recorded accounts of real-life immigrants from the 80s, 90s, and today.

The five deviser-performers were Timmy Ong, Shan Y. Chuang, Jeremy Rafal, Mandarin Wu, and Jiemin Yang.
